Readers of The Bitten Word cooked every recipe in the September 2013 Bon Appetit magazine. Here's their take on Apple Salad with Walnuts and Lime.

Erica: The herbs, spices, and lime juice complemented each other nicely. I like vegetable salads and am not crazy about those that have fruits, nuts, and cheese. But if you do, this is a good one, and probably could be served over lettuce. Easy to find the ingredients and fast to assemble. Toss the apples with the lime juice first to prevent discoloration.

Jane: We made this dish the other night and were very excited about it. I am a big fan of salad and thought this would be a fresh new recipe. We followed it precisely but omitted the red pepper flakes. The salad was missing something... it needed to be sweetened. We don't usually add sugar to much of anything, but this salad was seriously lacking Between the lime and the parsley, it was one sour dish! If we were to try to make it again, we would add at least one tablespoon of honey.

Bonnie: This dish wasn't hard to make. If my husband and I had been making just for us to eat, we would probably have used shortcuts (omitting the parsley, for example). But each ingredient was essential to either the flavor profile or the look of the salad (parsley contributes only to looks, I feel). That said, I didn't find said flavors to be fantastic. Each stood by itself -- peppery, cheesy, citrusy, toasty -- rather than being a layered whole. That's probably the intention, but I just didn't find it that yummy. Perhaps I can try this at Ava Gene's one day (since I live in Portland), and find out how it ideally should taste.

Reynaul : This salad was awesome! If you can tell by my picture, I may or may not have eaten the whole recipe for dinner. Definitely would make this again. Only thing that I did differently from the recipe is that I forgot to add the parsley, but oh well. Next time!
Amanda: This was pretty disappointing. If the recipe called for half the bread crumbs, twice the walnuts and nixed the lime juice it could maybe pass but as it was the breadcrumbs and the juice formed this goopy mess that made the apples soggy and weird. PASS! Didn't even make it to the dinner table.
