So here's the good news: You can make a chocolate cake in your microwave in less than five minutes!
And here's the bad news: You can make a chocolate cake in your microwave in less than five minutes.
That's right.
Got a craving for chocolate cake? Whip one up! It only takes a few minutes.
But if you're like us and need very little excuse to make yourself a treat, well, you should look away now. Because not only are these microwave chocolate cakes easy, they're also pretty darn good.
This recipe comes from a "10-Minute Desserts" feature in Food Network Magazine. All the recipes are taken from the magazine's first cookbook, Great Easy Meals: 250 Fun and Fast Recipes, which has just been released.
Some of the recipes are of the "this only takes a second" variety, such as Blue Cheese and Pears (spread blue cheese on pears and drizzle with honey). Others have some interesting shortcuts if you're pressed for time, like Chocolate Crème Brulee (put prepared pudding in a ramekin, sprinkle with sugar, caramelize with a torch and top with fresh fruit. This one could be an utter fail, but on the plate it looks just like crème brulee).
But it was the Instant Chocolate Cake that caught our attention.
Here's the idea:
Place the ingredients for chocolate cake in a coffee mug, mix them together, microwave for two minutes, and sprinkle with cocoa powder. Voila! Chocolate cake!
The result isn't the same as a chocolate cake you've baked in an oven. In fact, the consistency here is much like a sponge cake. But for a cake made in the microwave, in less than five minutes from start to finish, we think it's pretty good (especially if you drizzle a little caramel or chocolate sauce on top). If you're needing a chocolate cake fix, this will do the job.
That said, if you're craving a chocolate cake and have the time, make this Chocolate Stout Cake. It's our hands-down favorite chocolate cake and has never disappointed.
